How to send an attachment with Mail Merge for Gmail

There are some limitations to this feature:
  • Attachment has to be present in your (or in a public) Google Drive
  • Attachment size should be under 5 Mb

Step 1 : Add the attachment to your Google Drive (optional)

If not done yet, here is how to add a file to Google Drive :
  1. 1.
    From Google Drive, locate and select the New button, then select File upload.
  2. 2.
    Locate and select the file(s) you want to upload on your computer, then click Open.
  3. 3.
    The File is now visible in your Google Drive.
  4. 4.
    Don't close Google Drive right now, we will need it in the next step !
In Google drive, click on "New" to upload your future attachment file

Step 2: Get the Google Drive URL of your future attachment

  1. 1.
    From Google Drive, Right Click on the file you want to attach to your mail template, then Click on "Get link"
  2. 2.
    On the Pop-up, click on "Copy link", the URL link has just been added to your clipboard.
  3. 3.
    You can now go back to Mail Merge for Gmail
Click on "Get Link"
Click on "Copy Link" to get the URL in the clipboard

Step 3 : Create the attachment in Mail Merge for Gmail

  1. 1.
    In Google Sheets, in your Spreadsheet, create a new column (the header name / column doesn't matter, here we selected column B), and paste the Google Drive File Id URL.
  2. 2.
    Launch Mail Merge for Gmail, click on "More Options", and in field "G-Drive URL", select the column where you pasted the URL seconds ago (in my example it's still column B )
  3. 3.
    Send your new campaign with attachments!
Create a column to store the attachment URL
Don't forget to set the Google drive column

Attachment issues:

Here are the most common errors encountered with attachments:
1- Message "Attachment Error, Limit Exceeded: Email Total Attachments Size should not exceed 25Mb":
There is a limit on the size you are allowed to send with Gmail (It's a limitation decided by Google), we can't do anything about that.
2- Message "Check that provided URL is a Google Drive File URL which you have permission to access":
Attachment has to be a valid Google Drive URL, we can't attach files provided from other places than Google Drive for security reasons. To get a proper Google Drive URL, you can follow the Step 2 instructions in the above guide.
